Sisyphus the Tank Pusher

Looping Animation,  2015

The video is dedicated to the anonymous young man from 26 years ago, who later became the hero of the 20th Century. Confronting gigantic iron monsters of death, his figure was captured and spread all over the world. Ever since the moment, his image has been used as the universal icon of revolutions and youth rebellions. However, I have my own understanding on this historical figure.

In my animation, I no longer consider the heroic Tank Man as the foe of those tanks, which are obviously symbols of unchallengeable authority. Instead, I finally started to understand they are marching toward same direction, same destination – a miserable future, regardless how distinct their ideologies are, or how much difference between their power. In the era that revolution can never success; in the era that Capitalism is undefeatable and almighty; every way of resistance leads to meaningless gestures and aimless violence. After all, the Tank Man is no more than a tragic hero. He is Sisyphus, repeating same labor everyday. More efforts he puts, more energy his enemy gets. Then, it loops forever.
